An extraordinary journey and adventure awaits you in the Pamir Mountains. You will travel more than 1200km along winding mountain roads and cloud-piercing passes on the “Road of Life” — the Pamir Highway — to the “Roof of the World,” mountainous Badakhshan. You’ll see ancient Buddhist stupas and caves in Vrang, fire-worshipper fortresses in the famous Wakhan Valley along the Panj River; bathe in the healing hot springs of Garm-Chashma and Bibi Fatima; admire the snow-covered peaks of the Pamirs and the Afghan Hindu Kush, herds of yaks grazing on sparse mountain pastures, and the high-altitude Karakul Lake. You’ll discover the culture, traditions, and lifestyle of the mountain Pamiris, bargain at the exotic Sunday bazaar in Ishkashim, and visit places once walked by Alexander the Great, Persian King Cyrus, and Venetian traveler Marco Polo.

1
Arrival in Dushanbe
Welcome to Tajikistan — a land of towering mountains and ancient history. Upon arrival in Dushanbe, the capital, transfer to the hotel and rest after the flight. In the afternoon, enjoy a city tour.
2
Dushanbe – Kalai-Khumb (370 km, 8 hrs)
Departure to Kalai-Khumb (Darvaz) — the gateway to Mountainous Badakhshan, a small but strategic town at the confluence of the Panj and Obikhumbou rivers. En route, we pass the scenic Nurek Reservoir, formed by the 300-meter-high Nurek Dam. We continue to Kulyab, stopping at the Khoja Mumin salt mine and the Hulbuk archaeological complex (9th–12th centuries). In ancient Kulyab (over 2,700 years old), we’ll have lunch and visit the golden-domed Mausoleum of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, a prominent 14th-century Sufi saint and poet. The road then winds along the Panj River, bordering Afghanistan, offering views of Afghan villages for nearly 100 km. Upon arrival in Kalai-Khumb, hotel check-in.
3
Kalai-Khumb – Khorog (240 km, 6 hrs)
Today we head to Khorog, the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. The challenging road through mountain passes and deep Panj River gorges is rewarded with stunning views. You’ll see Afghan landscapes and villages across the river. Upon arrival, lunch and hotel check-in, followed by a tour of this cozy town at 2,000 meters above sea level, nestled along both banks of the Gunt River. We’ll visit the alpine botanical garden, local bazaar, central park with ancient trees and a lake. Overnight at hotel.
4
Khorog – Ishkashim (120 km, 4–5 hrs)
We journey into the legendary Wakhan Valley — a narrow corridor flanked by the Pamirs to the north and the Afghan Hindu Kush to the south. En route, we visit the famous Garm-Chashma hot spring. In the nearby mountains, the Kuh-i-Lal mine once yielded precious Badakhshan rubies. We continue to Ishkashim, a small town at the mouth of the Wakhan Corridor, where the “Great Game” between Tsarist Russia and Britain ended in the 19th century. If arriving on Saturday, you can visit the colorful Tajik-Afghan border bazaar on the Afghan side — no visa required. Overnight in a guesthouse.
5
Ishkashim – Langar (140 km, 6–7 hrs)
A day full of discoveries. Drive from Ishkashim to Langar, visiting ancient fire-worshipper fortresses on the Silk Road — Kah-Kaha and Yamchun (4th–3rd centuries BCE). We’ll explore the family museum of Sufi Muborak-Kadami Vakhani, a local scholar, theologian, poet, and inventor — the “Leonardo da Vinci of the Pamirs.” He crafted musical instruments, paper, looms, and a stone solar calendar by hand. We’ll also visit the Buddhist stupa in Vrang and recommend bathing in the sacred hot spring of Bibi Fatima. Enjoy walks in Langar, a small mountain village at the eastern edge of the Wakhan Valley. Overnight in a guesthouse.
6
Langar – Murghab (240 km, 6–7 hrs)
We begin with a visit to petroglyphs — over 600 ancient rock carvings in the open air. Continue through the scenic Alichur Valley via the challenging Khargush Pass (4,344 m). Along the way, view snow-capped peaks over 6,000 meters and high-altitude tundra. Arrive in Murghab, a remote settlement near the Chinese border, the highest (3,600 m) and most isolated district center in the former USSR. From here, you can see Muztagh Ata (7,546 m), the region’s tallest peak. Walk around the village. Overnight in a basic 1-star hotel.
7
Murghab – Karakul Lake (140 km, 3 hrs) – Kyrgyz Border (105 km, 2 hrs) – Osh
The longest travel day — we depart at 7:00 AM to cover nearly 500 km. En route, breathtaking views of mountains and glaciers unfold. Amid the arid mountain desert, the stunning Karakul Lake appears, formed millions of years ago. Snow and ice linger on its shores until late June. In good weather, you can see the southern face of Lenin Peak (7,134 m). We cross the region’s highest pass — Ak-Baital (4,655 m) — and the Kyzyl-Art Pass (4,280 m) on the Zaalai Range, which divides the Amu Darya and Syr Darya river basins. After border formalities, we descend to the Kyrgyz checkpoint Bordoba, where we say goodbye to our Tajik guide and driver. Kyrgyz guides and driver meet us and take us to the Alay Valley for lunch in Sary-Tash. The contrast between Tajikistan’s barren mountains and Kyrgyzstan’s green alpine meadows is striking. After lunch, we drive along a smooth asphalt road with scenic views to Osh — the final point of the Pamir Highway, a city with 3,000 years of history and the unofficial southern capital of Kyrgyzstan. Overnight at hotel.
