Kazakhstan is the largest country in Central Asia by land area — and ranks ninth in the world! Its vast territory includes the towering Tian Shan Mountains in the southeast and the Altai Mountains in the northeast. The central part of the country is covered by wide steppes and deserts. To the west, Kazakhstan borders the Caspian Sea. In the south, near the border with Uzbekistan, you’ll find ancient architectural and cultural landmarks such as the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, Arystanbab Mausoleum, and the ruins of Otrar.
Among the most interesting cities are Almaty, the first capital of Kazakhstan, and the stunning new capital — Astana.
