Hidden in the heart of Karakalpakstan, northwestern Uzbekistan, lies one of the region’s most striking natural wonders — the Barsakelmes Salt Flat.
Imagine a vast, shimmering desert of salt stretching more than 50 km, where the horizon seems endless. After rain, the flat transforms into a magical mirror, reflecting the sky and drifting clouds — a photographer’s dream and a traveler’s delight.
The name Barsakelmes means “Go and never return,” a fitting description of its surreal landscape. With no landmarks in sight and the blazing summer sun creating dazzling mirages, the salt flat feels like another world.
Size: Over 1,000 sq. km, up to 35 km wide east–west, and 50 km north–south
