Gelan, perhaps the most exotic village in Uzbekistan, is located high in the Hissar Mountains on the border with Tajikistan and was long closed to tourists. It is now becoming a popular ethnographic site. Situated at an altitude of 1,800-2,200 meters above sea level, Gelan is surrounded on all sides by high mountains, reaching over 4,000 meters in the east. Residents of the village have been growing potatoes on the steep mountain slopes for 800 years, preserving ancient customs and way of life. The surrounding area of Gelan, as well as the road leading to it, are incredibly beautiful.
